Feast Day of St. Francis

Today is the feast day of St. Francis. As you may or may not know, the St. Francis story goes something like this, “There was a man who was rich and had a lot of toys and money. He gave it all away and went out to take care of all the sick people and animals.” At least this is what Diego told me when he returned from his lesson during Children’s Chapel, at church yesterday.

Actually, it’s a little more complicated than that. As told by our rector at All Saints yesterday, during his sermon, St. Francis had a lot more to do with being a courageous peacemaker. But the part about St. Francis “helping the animals, ” I think Diego got that a little right, since we seem to associate St. Francis with the “blessing of all creatures great and small.”  Here’s a wonderful example of that during the blessing of the animals at yesterday’s 9:00 a.m. service.

All creatures great...
and small, receive a blessing.

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small. All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.
